Professor at the University of Coimbra, Portugal, lecturing courses and doing research on algae for more than 20 years (Phycology, Biotechnology of Algae, Limnology and Field Biology). Curator and responsible for expanding the Coimbra Collection of Microalgae (ACOI) to its actual size. Coordinator of the research and phycological projects developed at ACOI. Main publications concern the Eustigmatophyceae, biodiversity, conservation and biotechnology of microalgae. Coordinator of ACOI services such as preparing and providing microalgal inocula, identification keys/guides and consultancy in the area of microalgae for national and international entities. Responsible for editing the information about microalgal cultures disclosed on the website http://acoi.ci.uc.pt/. Chairman and vice-chairman of the Department of Botany Scientific Committee for 4 years. Coordinator of the UC Master Degree in Biology for 2 years. Manuscript reviewer for phycological journals. Coordinator of the UC participation in the NoMorFilm Project (WPs 1, 5, 7 and 8), responsible for delivering a list of selected microalgae for polycultures, a workshop on microalgae issues and a European network database for the project strains.
