Mario Tredici

Professor of Agricultural Microbiology at the University of Florence

Mario Tredici is full professor of Agricultural Microbiology at the University of Florence, where he has held courses of General Microbiology, Soil Microbiology, Industrial and Environmental Microbiology, Biotechnology of Microorganisms. His research topics include design of novel photobioreactors for algae cultivation, microalgal biomass production for food and feeds, nutraceuticals and bioactives, aquaculture, biofuels and CO2 biofixation. He has over 120 publications and 35 years of experience in the field of microalgae biotechnology.

He has acted as technical advisor for several companies and institutions (e.g., Hawaii Natural Energy Institute, International Energy Agency, Carbon Trust, ENI SpA). He is member of the Board of ISAP (International Society for Applied Phycology), of which he has been President (2002- 2005), and of the Accademia dei Georgofili of Florence. He is the vice-president, and former president, of EABA (European Algae Biomass Association) and has been chair of ESBF (European Sustainable Biofuel Forum). He is in the board of Fotosintetica & Microbiologica Srl, a spin-off company of the University of Florence, founded in 2004 with his collaborators. He was awarded the “Distinguished Applied Phycologist Award” (ISAP, 2014).

His research group has participated, or is participating, to several European projects on microalgae production for biofuels and added-value compounds: the FP7 projects AquaFuels, GIAVAP and BIOFAT, and the H2020 projects NOMORFILM and PHOTOFUEL. He is the scientific coordinator of BIOFAT.
